DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

The Deferential settlement is often occurred between road embankment in soft ground and bridge structure. The bearing unit structure was selected and design to prevent this problem. Department of Highway (DOH) intends to improve the design assumptions and design methodology for the bearing unit. The monitoring data is used to assess the design methodology during construction and long term performance. The results of the monitoring will be justified how the further remedial work can prolong the longevity or provide the early warning of impending and/or critical failure. International Engineering Consultants Co., Ltd. (IEC) awarded contract to carried out the geotechnical instrumentation work to monitored the behavior of the bearing unit in term of ground movement, pore water pressure, total pressure and also surface settlement. Interpretation and analysis using geotechnical finite element program were carried out.

SCOPE OF SERVICES:

  • Supplied and installed the following instruments:

  • Horizontal and Vertical Inclinometers to monitor magnitude and rate of ground movement in lateral and vertical directions.

  • Pneumatic Piezometer, to assess the pore pressure distribution.

  • Observation well, to monitored ground water level.

  • Surface settlement plate to monitor surface settlement.

  • Total pressure call, to monitored total pressure that acting on the bearing unit slab.

  • Monitoring work and interpretation report

  • Analysis the instrumentation results using geotechnical Finite element program

KEY FACTORS:

  • The data is used to verify the design assumptions and to check that performance is as predicted.

  • The monitoring results are assessed how the construction can proceed without risk of failure and perform proper function in long term period.

  • The monitoring results provide the early warning of impending and/or critical failure.

  • Improve the design methodology.
